Abstract
Background and purpose: This study aimed to examine the effect of Parent-Child Interaction Therapy
(PCIT) provided to mothers of children with Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), mostly
hyperactive-impulsive type, on reducing symptoms, improving behavioral performance at home, and
enhancing social skills in their children.
Method: The research employed a quasi-experimental design with a pretest-posttest and a control group.
The statistical population consisted of boys aged 7 to 10 years diagnosed with ADHD, who were studying
during the 2022-2023 academic year in District 2 of Rey City, along with their mothers. Participants were
selected using convenience sampling and screened using the Conners Parent Rating Scale to identify
children with ADHD. A total of 30 children and their mothers were randomly assigned to either the experimental
group or the control group. The research instruments included the Conners Parent Rating Scale (1999), the
Swanson Parent-Reported Home Behavior Scale (1992), and the Social Skills Rating System (Gresham
& Elliott, 1990). The Parent-Child Interaction Therapy was performed in twelve 60-minute sessions in
experimental group. Data were analyzed using analysis of covariance.
Results: The results of covariance analysis (ANCOVA) revealed significant differences between the
experimental group, which received PCIT, and the control group, which did not receive any intervention. The
findings demonstrated that PCIT effectively reduced ADHD symptoms, improved behavioral performance at
home, and enhanced social skills in children.
Conclusion: The findings indicate that Parent-Child Interaction Therapy can be recommended as an
effective non-pharmacological intervention for managing ADHD symptoms and associated behavioral and
social challenges.
