Background: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of the local and group games social skills of mentally retarded male students 16 to 19 years. Method: This study was a experimental study design with pre-test and post-test, and with experimental and control groups. The statistical population of this study was mentally retarded male students in first term secondary school in the Tanbakoochi dormitory Mashhad. 60 students were chosen and randomly assigned to two control and experimental groups. The experimental group was exposed in ten sessions local and group games and the control group were on a waiting list. Data were collected by the children's social skills assessment checklist Matson Data were analyzed using ANCOVA. Results: Data analysis showed that the post-test between the experimental and control groups, there is a significant difference in the rate of social skill (P < 0/05). Conclusion: Since the game is a fun activity, students trying to increase their good behavior to continue playing in the group; Thus the, local and group games can increase social skills of students with mental retardation.
