Introduction and purpose: Caring for a disabled child can have numerous psychological and social
consequences for parents. The present study was conducted with the aim of comparing the effectiveness of
parenting based on compassion and parenting based on acceptance and commitment on feelings of shame
in mothers with children with physical-mental disabilities.
Method: The study was a quasi-experimental design of pre-test-post-test-follow-up with a control
group. The statistical population included male and female students aged 7 to 14 years at the Imam Javad
city of Sari in 2022-2023, from among them, 45 children were selected and their mothers were randomly
assigned to the intervention group of parenting based on compassion, parenting based on acceptance and
Commitment or control group were placed. For the experimental groups, 8 weekly 60-minute sessions
of parenting intervention based on compassion or parenting based on acceptance and commitment were
implemented, and no intervention was performed for the control group. At the beginning and after the end
of the intervention sessions, as well as one month later, all participants completed the feelings of shame
questionnaire. The data were analyzed using the repeated analysis of variance test.
Results: The results showed that parenting intervention based on compassion and parenting based on
acceptance and commitment have significant effectiveness in improving feelings of shame in mothers with
children with physical-mental disabilities (p<0.001). There was no significant difference between the two
interventions in terms of effectiveness.
Conclusion: According to the results of this study, feelings of shame in mothers with children with
physical-mental disabilities can be improved through the intervention of parenting based on compassion
and parenting based on acceptance and commitment.
