Abstract
Background and Purpose: The present study aims at investigating the mediating role of resilience and
self-efficacy in the relationship between internalized stigma and social functioning in adolescents with
physical disabilities.
Method: Using causal modeling methods, this research is conducted in a correlational type. The statistical
population of the research includes those clients with physical disabilities who were documented in the
Welfare Department of Rasht and Dāmghān in 2022. 225 cases were selected as the final sample using
the available sampling method. The research tools used in this study are Price et al.'s scale of social and
adaptive functioning of children and adolescents (2003), Internalized Stigma Scale of Mental Illness by
Ritsher et al. (2003), the Resilience Scale by Connor Davidson (2003), and General Self-Efficacy Scale
by Sherer (1982). Furthermore, data analysis is executed using the structural equation modeling method.
Findings: The research findings show that resilience plays a mediating role in the relationship between
internalized stigma and social functioning (p<0.001). Moreover, self-efficacy plays a mediating role in the
relationship between internalized stigma and social functioning (p<0.001).
Conclusion: With regard to the results, resilience and self-efficacy play a mediating role in the relationship
between internalized stigma and the social functioning of adolescents with physical disabilities. Therefore,
the use of resilience and self-efficacy strategies leads to a reduction in the relationship between internal
stigma and social functioning in adolescents with physical disabilities.
