Abstract
Background and Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of mindfulness
training on the symptoms of children with stuttering disorder.
Method: The method of this research is quasi-experimental and the design of pre-test and post-test was
used along with the control group. The statistical population in this research included all children aged
7 to 9 with stuttering disorder in Rasht City who had referred to speech therapy centers in the academic
year of 2022 - 2023. Children stuttering 22 were selected from this statistical population according to the
entry and exit conditions of the sample and then they were randomly assigned to two experimental and
control groups. In this study, Riley's Stuttering Severity Scale (2009) was used to measure the degree of
stuttering disorder symptoms, which was performed on both groups in the pre-test and post-test phases.
The experimental group received the child-centered mindfulness training program during 10 sessions
of 60 minutes each week, but the control group did not receive any other treatment except the treatment
program for stuttering by speech therapy. Finally, the obtained data were analyzed with the statistical
methods of univariate and multivariate covariance analysis.
Results: Data analysis showed that child-centered mindfulness intervention causes the symptoms of
children with stuttering disorder. And this means a reduction in the symptoms of children with stuttering
disorder in the experimental group compared to the control group.
Conclusion: Child-centered mindfulness training with techniques such as relaxation training and anxiety
reduction can act as an effective psychological method in improving children with stuttering disorder along
with speech therapy.
