Abstract
Background and purpose: Studies indicate that there are problems in the sensory processing system
in children with autism spectrum disorder, which leads to many limitations in the path of adaptation and
education for them and their parents. The purpose of this study was to phenomenological examine parents'
lived experiences of the challenges of sensory processing disorders in children with autism spectrum
disorder.
Method: The study was based on a qualitative approach and phenomenological method. The statistical
population included all mothers of children with autism spectrum disorder in day care centers in Kashan.
The research sample included 17 mothers of this group of children who were selected using purposive
sampling and observing the principles of theoretical saturation. Data were collected using semi-structured
interviews and analyzed using Collaizi method.
Findings: The results indicated that 2 main themes and 9 subthemes were extracted. The main themes
were: dimensions of sensory processing disorder (feeding, dressing, bathing and grooming, sound and
light stimuli, touch and olfactory stimuli) and sensory processing modification (trainer exercises, parent
exercises and accepting challenges and lifestyle changes), which were examined in detail in the study.
Conclusion: According to the results, it was determined that addressing the sensory processing
problems and challenges of children with autism spectrum disorder, along with their other problems,
requires providing necessary training and developing comprehensive programs for educational centers
and their parents.
