Background and purpose: Entering puberty and the changes that follow it can be difficult and exhausting
for mentally disabled students who have limitations in learning. The purpose of the present research was
to explain the phenomenology of the challenges of puberty of students with intellectual disabilities.
method: The research method was based on qualitative approach and phenomenological method. The
statistical population included all mothers of mentally retarded female students in exceptional schools in

by applying the purposeful sampling method and following the principles of theoretical saturation. The
data was collected using semi-structured interviews and analyzed with the 7-step Collaizi method.
Findings: The results indicated the extraction of 3 main themes and 8 secondary themes. The main
themes are: individual-oriented challenge (resistance to puberty changes, mood changes during
puberty, physical changes during puberty, adherence to religious issues, independence or dependence on
parents); family-oriented challenge (exhaustion of parents, how to inform students about puberty); and
academic challeng (disruption in the educational process) that were examined in detail in the research.

challenges of intellectually disabled female students and their families during puberty, and therefore,
providing support and educational services for them can reduce the problems.
