Background: Practices or strategies to deal with the stress that a person applies play an important role in physical and mental health. Evaluation processes, cognitive-behavioral coping and efforts to interpret and overcome problems in life are effective. This study aimed to compare the stress (stress) parenting and family problem solving skills in mothers of students with special needs and normal.

Method: The study is causal-comparative or retrospective research.  Population of the study includes all students in regular schools and in the special needs schools of Shahryar province. According to the study, population included four groups of mothers of normal children, autism, hearing impaired and mental retarded students. Each group consist 30 participants that they were selected by stratified sampling. For collecting data, the following questionnaires were used: parenting stress index and the scale of the problem of family. Data were analyzed by one-way ANOVA and post hoc test Scheffe.

Results: The results showed that parenting stress has significant effect on mothers of students with special needs. It means that mothers of students with autism experience significant increase stress in compare with others.

Conclusion: The characteristics of students with special needs, worries about the continuing acceptance by society and even other family members as well as the failure to reduce special support can be effective in emerging stress.
