Background and Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate a structural model of psychological distress in mothers of children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) based on mindfulness and perceived social support, with the mediating role of anger rumination.
Materials and Methods: This study was fundamental in its objective and employed a descriptive-correlational design using structural equation modeling (SEM). The target population consisted of all mothers of children with ASD attending special education schools and rehabilitation centers in Tehran during the 2024-2025 academic year. A final sample of 290 mothers was selected through convenience sampling. Data collection instruments included the Psychological Distress Scale (Lovibond & Lovibond, 1995), the Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support (Zimet et al., 1988), the Anger Rumination Scale (Sukhodolsky et al., 2001), and the Mindfulness Questionnaire (Baer et al., 2006). Descriptive statistics (mean and standard deviation) were used to summarize the data, while Pearson correlation tests and structural equation modeling,SPSS-27 and AMOS-24 software, were employed for inferential analysis.
Results: The findings indicated that the conceptual model demonstrated a good fit (χ²/df = 3.4, RMSEA = 0.08, SRMR = 0.07, GFI = 0.92, AGFI = 0.90). Anger rumination significantly mediated the relationship between mindfulness (β = -0.08, p < 0.05) and perceived social support (β = -0.06, p < 0.05) with psychological distress.
Conclusion: Based on the results, interventions focusing on mindfulness and anger-related emotional regulation strategies, as well as the establishment of support groups, can help prevent the development of psychological distress in mothers of children with ASD
