Background and purpose: Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder that primarily affects an individual's perception and social interaction patterns. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of the picture exchange communication system (PECS) based educational program on the social skills and emotional–behavioral disorders of students with Autism Spectrum Disorder.
Materials and Methods: The study employed a quasi-experimental design with a pre-test, post-test, and follow-up control group. The statistical population consisted of 60 students with ASD enrolled in special education schools in Kermanshah during the 2023–2024 academic year A sample of 52 students was selected through convenience sampling method and then randomly assigned to either an experimental group (n=26) or a control group (n=26). The experimental group participated in 64 PECS training sessions over a two-month period, whereas the control group received no intervention during the study period. Data were collected using Teacher Form of the Social Skills Rating System (SSRS; Gresham & Elliott, 1990), which assesses both social skills and problem behaviors. To analyze the findings, Repeated Measures Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) was conducted.
Results: The results of the data analysis indicated that the PECS educational program had a statistically significant effect on improving of social skills and the reducing of emotional–behavioral disorders in students with ASD (p < 0.05).Materials and Methods: The study employed a quasi-experimental design with a pre-test, post-test, and follow-up control group.
