Background and Purpose: This study was conducted with the aim of determining the effectiveness of
cognitive behavioral intervention on self-coherence, emotion regulation and self-compassion of mothers
of mentally retarded children.
Materials and Methods: The research method was semi-experimental with a pre-test and post-test
design with a control group and a two-month follow-up period. The statistical population of the research
was all the mothers of mentally retarded children in Masjid Suleiman in 1403 (92 people) and the research
sample included 30 of these mothers (15 people in the experimental group and 15 people in the control
group) using the available sampling method and according to the study inclusion criteria were selected. The
experimental group received the intervention program during 8 weeks and 8 sessions of 90 minutes. The
questionnaires used in this research included self-coherence questionnaires (Antonowski, 1997), emotion
regulation (Garnefski et al., 2001) and self-compassion (Neff, 2016). The data were analyzed using
variance analysis with repeated measurements, SPSS version 22 software and a significance level of 0.05.
Results: The findings showed that there was a significant difference between the experimental and control
groups in terms of self-coherence, emotion regulation, and self-compassion (p<0.001).
Conclusion: The results of this research showed that the cognitive-behavioral therapy program improved
self-coherence, emotion regulation and self-compassion, and this can replace negative emotions by
informing and helping cognitive reconstruction, and reduce psychological damage mothers.
