Abstract
Background & Purpose: This research was conducted with the aim of determining the effectiveness of
cognitive therapy based on mindfulness on self-criticism and parenting competence of mothers of children
with autism spectrum disorder.
Materials and Methods: Method: The research method was semi-experimental with a pre-test and posttest
design with a control group and a two-month follow-up period. The statistical population of the study was
all mothers of children with autism spectrum disorder in Bushehr city in 1402 in the number of 182 people. After
the pre-test, 30 mothers who were eligible to enter the study and were willing to cooperate were selected as
available and were randomly assigned to two experimental and control groups in the ratio of 15 in each group.
. Then, during 8 weeks and in 8 sessions of 90 minutes, the experimental group participated in a cognitive
therapy intervention based on mindfulness, which was conducted by the researcher in a psychological service
center, and during this period, the control group did not receive any intervention. After the intervention sessions,
the post-test was completed by the participants. The scales used in this research included self-criticism and
parental competence. Data were analyzed by repeated measure analysis of variance using SPSS version 22
software.
Results: The findings showed that there was a significant difference between the experimental and control
groups in terms of self-criticism and parenting competence (p<0.001). In other words, cognitive therapy
based on mindfulness decreased self-criticism and increased parenting competence.
Conclusion: According to the findings of this research, it is possible to suggest the intervention of cognitive
therapy based on mindfulness as an effective method to reduce self-criticism and increase parenting
competence of mothers of children with autism spectrum disorder.
