Abstract
Background and purpose: Currently, the world is facing the problem of lack of special educational methods for
students with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Due to the fact that traditional methods do not provide
suitable opportunities for students with intellectual and developmental disabilities, the aim of the present study is to
find different educational facilities to help solve this problem and also to find ways to improve the education of children
with intellectual and developmental disabilities in such a way that not only the disability of these people does not
prevent them from learning, but also each person receives a unique education according to his needs.
Method: The method of the present study is of descriptive and review type. To collect information, articles,
books, and theses from reliable scientific databases for example; Google Scholar, Pub Med, ScienceDirect,
Springer, Semantic Scholar, ProQuest, UNESCO Digital Library and Amazon between the years 2001 to
2023 were used with the help of keywords such as educational technology, children with special needs, new
methods of teaching children with special needs, technology, and children with developmental and intellectual
disabilities. At the initial search, a total number of 93 articles were selected, of which 3 articles was excluded
for duplication in several databases, and 10 article was excluded due to review, and 40 were excluded due to
unpredictable and inconsistency with the research topic. Finally, 40 articles were reviewed using the latest
revision of the Consolidated Standard of Reporting Trials (CONSORT; 2017).
Findings: According to the investigations some new methods used in the education of students with
intellectual and developmental disabilities including: virtual reality, augmented reality and the comparison of
these two, artificial intelligence, Internet of things, chatbots, smart watch, educational software, mobile phone
and computer applications.
Conclusion: Like all human beings, people with intellectual and developmental disability, must acquire the
required knowledge and abilities to cope with the society's demands. It should be taken into consideration that
the educational needs of these people are different from others and that, due to mental and practical limitations
that affect their abilities, they have special educational needs. Therefore, access to formal education levels,
especially through assistive technologies and online applications, is very useful and desirable for people
with such disabilities because, in this way, they learn to be more independent in their daily lives and can do
their activities without the help of caregivers or others. In addition, the users of these technological tools are
able to adjust the speed, place, and time of using the auxiliary software according to their needs. However, a
large amount of work is still required to be done in the field of web-based applications aimed at improving the
performance of people with intellectual disabilities in learning and daily life.
