Abstract
Background and purpose: Having a mentally disabled child affects various aspects of parents' lives,
especially mothers. These mothers are prone to various psychological risks due to suffering many
stressful factors, the existence of rumination and the use of undeveloped defense styles. Therefor
the aim of the current research was to determine the effectiveness of Intensive Short-Term Dynamic
Psychotherapy (ISTDP) on defense styles and rumination of mothers with mentally disabled child.
Methods: The research method was quasi-experimental with a pre-test-post-test design with a
control group. The statistical population of the research was all mothers aged 30 to 45 who had a mentally
disabled child in Shahriar, Tehran, who had visited Tapesh Rehabilitation Center in 2022. The sample
size of this study included 30 mothers who were selected based on the criteria of the study by available
sampling method in Tapesh Shahriar Rehabilitation Center and randomly replaced in two experimental
(15 people) and control (15 people) groups. Andrews et al.'s defense mechanisms questionnaire (1993)
and Nolen-Hoeksema's rumination questionnaire (1991) were used to collect data. For the participants
of the experimental group, short-term intensive psychodynamic therapy sessions were held in 16
sessions for 90 minutes. Data analysis was done using multivariate covariance analysis (MANCOVA)
and SPSS version 24 software.
Results: The results of the research showed that the effectiveness of short-term psychodynamic
therapy intervention on developed defensive style (eta=0.43 and p=0.001), undeveloped defensive style
(eta=0.18 and p=0.040), the fruitless thinking component (eta=0.22 and p=0.022) and the depressive
rumination component (eta=0.18 and p=0.037) were confirmed.
Conclusion: Therefore, this treatment can be used to improve rumination and underdeveloped defensive
styles of mothers with mentally disabled child.
